Three ways to put green into your next home renovation project

A decade ago, energy-efficient homes were still niche. Today, sustainable building supplies have moved into the mainstream. What does green look like for your customers? Here are three easy ways to save the environment, while saving your clients money in the long run.

1. Add insulation for warmth

Exterior upgrades offer a great opportunity to add a layer of comfort to your client's home. If the walls are open, it's time to look at how to improve the R-value. The best way to do this is by adding an insulating layer.

Exterior walls – Many customers see a change to their home's outer layer as a way of updating their look or fixing up patchwork renos from over the years. But what's underneath the cladding can make a difference to warmth and energy efficiency.

HomeGuard house wrap by Mitten provides a layer of protection between your client's home and the elements, protecting the home from moisture problems and keeping heating bills low.

2. Think about where your rainwater goes

Something as simple as exterior drain replacement can offer your client a green choice in their home reno. Drain pipes made from low-maintenance, corrosion-resistant materials keep rain and snow away from the house, which prevents mould and mildew as well.

Kaycan rainware is available in both vinyl and aluminum, and can help your project become eligible for points toward LEED certification

3. Pay attention to ethical sourcing

Companies today take sustainability seriously. Gone are the days where price is the only bottom line. Where they source materials, people and products have become a big consideration.

Trex was one of the first in the industry to introduce composite decking as a sustainable alternative to wood. Beyond the material, itself, however, Trex has had more than two decades to reduce its environmental footprint as new technologies have come into play.

Trex decking is made from 95% recycled wood.

The company focuses on earth-friendly manufacturing processes, reclaiming factory waste and eliminating the use of harmful chemicals.

Trex is one of the largest plastic bag manufacturers in the United States, using recycled products to make the plastic film for its composites.  The average 500-square foot composite Trex deck contains 140,000 recycled plastic bags! Trex purchases and recycles:

- the overwrap on paper towels

- dry cleaner bags

- sandwich bags

- newspaper sleeves

- grocery and shopping bags.
